Star Lakes (2009)

Funding for Star Lakes did not make it through the budget cutting process.  It will be placed on the budget agenda gain next year.

Star Lakes (2008)

We attended a meeting in January/2008 in Hackensack hosted by Sen. Mary Olson concerning her proposal for a Star Lake concept similar to the Star Cities concept. The meeting was very well attended with about 100 people in attendence from 4 counties.

The purpose of the meeting was to gather input on the criteria to become a Star Lake and the benefits of attaining that status.

The criteria to become a Star Lake could include things like: an active lakeshore association with a Lakes Management Plan, water quality monitoring, member education (newsletter/web site), active land use/zoning positions, etc. Mary Olson received many comments on what should be included in the criteria and will consult with other agencies, members of the House/Senate, and will probably have additional meetings.

The benefits could include priority funding for septic compliance, exotic species control, water quality funding, legal assistance, etc.

We are not sure if this proposal will make it to bill status in this legislative session. Mary Olson will keep us apprised as to the next steps.
